About us

The Rabbit Haven is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization, a project of AVA. We are a member of the Bay Area Shelter Network, Northern California Rabbit rescue network, The Watsonville Task Force as well as a variety of other community groups. The Haven works with rabbit education and support groups, such as The House Rabbit Society, SaveABunny, Harvest Home and many others. We also work with a network of veterinarians who supply the Rabbit Haven with vital, up to date information and rabbit medical services.

In addition to our core services of rescue, medical support, foster and adoption placement,  the Rabbit Haven operates a spay neuter clinic every two months providing low cost spay and neuter services for rescued rabbits.  Our clinic is managed by Dr. Hilary Stern, DVM and provides services to 25+ rabbits per clinic day.    We are very proud of the services provided at our spay/neuter clinic. We operate with a minimum of two vets, four veterinary technician staff plus veterinary assistants. Five to eight Haven support staff that provides post op care in a loving professional setting.

The Haven network facilitates the rescue of many other small mammals, hamsters, rats, birds, ferrets, chinchillas, and sugar gliders.  Our guinea pig program The Cavy House run by Sue Duhamel, is always brimming  full of guinea pigs as well.  This year we added reptile rescue as we could see the glaring need for such services.

The Rabbit Haven is an all volunteer organization. We have no paid staff. The Rabbit Haven cares for 125 rabbits at any time through our foster site network. Our foster network is the core of our operations. The organization is funded by individual donors and grants. We have no city, county, state or federal funding.

The Rabbit Haven rescues abandoned rabbits and accepts surrendered rabbits from the general public, from shelters and from other rescue organizations in the counties of Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Sonoma, Sacramento, San Benito, Yolo, Contra Costa, and Monterey, and San Mateo. The Rabbit Haven works in the community, at schools, with shelters and with other education groups to provide education on rabbit care, feeding, grooming, medical, social and behavioral needs.
