Deadly Myxomatosis Outbreak in the Santa Cruz Area
September 24, 2014

At The Rabbit Haven, we have heard reports of dozens of rabbits dying suddenly due to myxomatosis infections in the last few weeks. The infections have been seen in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. The disease is almost always fatal in domestic rabbits, so rabbit guardians should do all they can to protect their bunnies from this terrible disease. There is currently no treatment available once a rabbit becomes infected.

Dr. Hilary Stern, DVM and our own Auntie Heather were recently interviewed by the Santa Cruz Sentinel to discuss the myxomatosis outbreak. The article is available on the Sentinel's web site. The article contains information about the disease, how it is spread, what the symptoms are and what you can do to protect you rabbits. The Rabbit Haven has additional information you can read also.
